Modern Otaku
illustrations & Process
This collection was born from one of my favorite creative playgrounds - the idea of weaving cosplay into the fabric of everyday life. I’ve always been enchanted by the thought that each of us carries a character, a hero or even a version of ourselves who radiates confidence and strength - someone we secretly long to step into.
Modern Otaku draws its heartbeat from an anime series that will always have a special place in my heart, Sword Art Online. In it, the protagonists find themselves trapped in a boundless virtual world where the only escape lies in conquering every level of the game. Over two long years, they endure trials that test their courage, sharpen their resolve, and compel them to grow beyond the selves they once knew — all in the hope of returning to reality. For me, that is the quiet magic of anime: no matter how fantastical or extreme the tale, there is always a thread of truth we can hold onto. It reminds us that we are never truly alone.
In bringing this collection to life, I wove in echoes of the characters’ costumes — their futuristic edge reimagined through sleek and refined silhouettes. The spirit of each piece is in the details: the curve of a button, the whisper of a texture, the way a fabric catches the light. The palette remains largely monochrome, with a single burst of color threading its way through, like a secret signature — a nod to the vibrant spark that lives at the heart of every hero’s journey.
